Project Overview

KenWave was retained by Kenaidan Contracting Ltd. to assess the wall condition of a 450 mm ductile iron plant waterline at the Ashbridges Bay Water Treatment Plant. Work was conducted to study the feasibility of hot-tapping the pipe to enable interconnection with a new 150 mm plant waterline.

The pipe carries plant process water and could not be taken out of service without causing major disruption to plant operations. KenWave Technology was used to obtain pipe condition data. The pipe had been in service since 1988, so it was likely to have suffered some internal and external erosion which could have compromised its suitability for hot tapping.

Results

  • Determined the nominal thickness of a 90 m long 450 mm DI
  • Preliminary analysis: the effective wall thickness is .411″ ±0.01″ with a burst pressure of 2,531 psi and a stiffness of 1,267 psi
  • Results were provided for individual 5 m segments, validated to within 5%
